Ok so this comment came up in one of the nursing communities I'm in, and it kind of irked me. Actually it more than 'kind of' irked me, it bothered me. A LOT.

I graduated from my hometown college back in 1997 with a Diploma in Nursing. I've been working almost constantly since a year after I graduated, mostly all hospital nursing with a year or two of long term care thrown in there, but in almost every situation I was a charge nurse with more responsibilities than your average bear.

What is the difference in perception between a nurse that has a Diploma or ADN, or a nurse that has her BSN to an 'outside the field' person? Do I, as a Diploma trained nurse, seem or appear less trained to you just because I don't have BSN behind my RN?

When I was going to school, it was well known on the floors when we were going to clinical that the nursing students from my school were better trained, more ready to work, and able to do more than the BScN students that were at our level or even a semester or two above. When it came to hiring, we were hired more often because of our last set of clinicals compared to the university - we had more experience on the floor.

I have heard many times since coming across the border to work that Canadian nurses seem to be better trained than those schooled in the US - and quite frankly, from being witness to several clinical sessions while I was working at the hospital in Great Bend, if my clinicals were as easy as those were when people were 2 weeks from graduating, my graduating class would have been a whole lot bigger!

So - I'm throwing it out to the general public, meaning YOU. What is your opinion of degree nurses versus diploma nurses?

Your Christmas tree, that is :)

We got ours put up today. It still needs a few finishing touches *bows, candy canes, etc* and I ran out of garland at the bottom, so I'll need to buy another skein of that, but all in all, it is done :)

We did it today so Nate could see it before he had to leave.

Here it is

Tree and most decorations from Wal~Mart, few decorations from Joann's.

I was sitting in Wally World today waiting for my Christmas tree to be brought in from the dang shipping containers, and it was taking a really long time. And just as my tree was coming in, they announced overhead that there were laptop computers on special sale for $388. I ignored that annoucement because I figured it was an Acer or some other cheap WalMart version of a laptop. They came back on a few minutes later, and announced that they still HAD those computers, and that they were HP.

I ran to the display. They were selling HP Mobile Student Entertainment Bundles, which are the HP dv6409wm laptops. I got one. I'm currently typing on my LAPTOP in my LIVINGROOM LOL

Now I just need to figure out how to transfer all my goodies from the desktop to this one.

JOY!

So I'm at work. On Thanksgiving night. We have 4 patients. There are 3 of us - myself as charge, Julie, who has all 4 patients, and Theresa, our CNA. We're babysitting 2 of our patients - they just never seem to go away. The other two are legitimately ill.

I've already done my 12 hour chart checks. There are no new MARs to check for tonight. I've gone through all the records to make sure we have careplans in place and all the areas are filled out. I've shopped online for my potential Christmas tree, at Target, which means I'll have to get it shipped in. I've read my Bloglines feed reader, cleared out my LJ friends page, and looked at digiscrap stuff.

I'm totally and completely farking bored, and it's only 10 til 10 LOL.

And the computers here are blocked from certain areas of the net, so I can't even play a good game or two while I'm here. *sighs*

I have my ACLS class today. I haven't updated it in about oh, 3 years or so.

It's changed. A LOT. And of course, I worked so much overtime in the last week? That my studying began this morning. At 2am.

I passed the pretest with 80%, but that was based on what I knew from last time. I kept screwing up the same damn rhythm analysis. Everytime they showed it to me, I picked wrong. GAH.

I hate this kind of class anyways, where I have to be in front of a bunch of people and actually use what I've learned. *headdesk*

I guess I'll pass. I hope I'll pass. I'll let you know on the flipside.

I charged tonight - with a full patient census of 20. Which included transfers to and from ICU and a new admit from ER. I had an LPN to cover, change of staff 3 times to cover a short-staffing issue (19-23 / 23-03 / 03-07) Not only did I wade my way through the pile of charts and incomplete orders that swarmed at 1900, I gave report on 20 patients in 21 minutes and had NO questions at the end.

My house sup tonight said she was so glad to be able to put me on charge last night when there was a sick call because she knew I could handle it and not lose my shit like some of the other charges do. Made me feel good because out of all the sups we have, she and one other are the ONLY ones that can handle the hospital falling around their ears, and apparently they think I can do the same thing :D

Back to work tonight to be a minion :P
